Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Massive Evacuations Confirmed

The island nation was severely impacted by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, which left at least two people dead and displaced over a million residents.

Officials stated that the massive storm caused widespread flash flooding, storm surges, mudslides, and fierce gale-force winds, prompting the evacuation of 1.4 million residents nationwide.

Widespread Damage and Emergency Operations

In Pandan, Catanduanes, one of the worst-hit regions, disaster response teams documented floodwaters reaching rooftop levels and homes washed out by the powerful currents.

Our team saved fourteen people stranded on the roof surrounded by water in a flood-prone area,” a disaster-mitigation officer explained. “A father frantically contacted us, reporting the roof of his house was at risk of tearing away due to the storm. We rescued him along with four family members.”

As of Monday morning, authorities confirmed at least two deaths: one from drowning in Catanduanes and a second individual killed when her house collapsed on Samar island.

Typhoon Strength and Projected Path

The intense storm weakened to a severe tropical storm early Monday as it crossed the Philippines’ largest island, home to the national capital.

According to the state weather service, the storm’s sustained wind speed decreased from 115 mph to 102 mph, though wind bursts were still reaching over 170 mph.

The storm system is projected to lose strength while heading in the direction of Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The country’s emergency management agency indicated it was still working to evaluate destruction on buildings and roads.

Roughly 6,000 evacuation centres have been opened to temporarily house 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

The typhoon hit just days after Typhoon Kalmaegi, which killed hundreds of lives with dozens unaccounted for before moving on toward Vietnam, where it killed five.

Search operations for the missing persons were halted recently due to safety concerns for rescue workers.

The climate crisis is causing cyclones more intense and common. This typhoon marks the twenty-first storm to hit the Philippines in 2025.

Scientists report that the rate of super-typhoons hitting the Philippines has increased doubled in the past twenty years.

Global assessments suggest that intense storms cause an average of millions in dollars in losses for the Philippines every year.

The nation’s leader declared an emergency declaration last week due to the severe damage caused by Kalmaegi and anticipated impacts from Fung-wong.
